Stonewall have just announced a major fundraising initiative.
Called The Equality Walk it takes place in New York next year. Basically, it's
a sponsored leisurely half-marathon round the Big Apple which ends up at the legendary
Stonewall Inn, regarded as the birthplace of gay liberation. It's not all
hard work either – after the walk you get a special celebrity party thrown in your
honour and two free days to shop or just chill.
|
If you want to take part you'll need to raise £1200 in sponsorship money, but you do have a
year to do it. That covers the cost of your flights and accommodation and the balance goes to Stonewall. They
say it's only the cost of a large coffee or pack of cigarettes a day. And you can reserve
your place on the walk for just £100. Already 60 of the 100 available places have been
taken.

The Walk is supported by founder member of Stonewall UK Sir Ian McKellen, who's currently
appearing onstage in New York. "I've campaigned with Stonewall from the very beginning. I hope
you will help Stonewall campaign for equality by walking the streets of New York....if
afterwards you are shopping down Fifth Avenue or cruising in Christopher Street, I'll
see you there!" |
Amongst those already signed up are Mr Gay and Ms Lesbian UK together with Stonewall
Executive Director Angela Mason. Bar group Six Continent are sending a team from
each of their bars - The Retro Bar, Rupert Street, Half Way to Heaven, Two
Brewers, Black Cap, The Gloucester, Comptons and The Colherne, Christopher Street and
the Champion. Also at the launch The Stonewall Bar in Lewisham presented Angela with
£1000, the first payment towards a team
of ten representing the pub.
We'll be keeping you up to date with news about The Equality Walk and you can get more details
from the Equality Walk Hotline on 020 7881 9443 or visit

Drag Queens started
the Stonewall Riot so it's only fitting that 5 signed up on launch night to do the walk.
13.1 miles in those heels, imagine!
