Opening Thursday 21st February at London's Riverside Studios is the fourth Deep Desires & Broken Dreams season of outstanding gay cinema featuring new films from around the world as well as classic titles from the archive. OutUK's Mike Gray previews some of the highlights.
Not to be missed are the U.K. premieres of Marco Berger and Marcelo Monaco's Sexual Tension: Vol 1 - in which deep desire is undoubtedly the prevailing theme - and Cal, the much anticipated follow-up to Shank, which proved a massive hit with Riverside audiences in the debut season. The directors and cast of Cal will also be at the screening to answer questions from the audience.

Other highlights include the recent U.K drama My Brother the Devil, which not only received great reviews from the British press but also won its director Sally El Hosaini the Best Newcomer award at the 2012 London Film Festival. Sally will be there to answer audience questions. San Francisco-set I Want Your Love proves one of the most eloquent - and sexually explicit - recent depictions of modern gay life and that the film's director Travis Mathews will be doing a Skype chat to discuss the project.

Leave It On the Floor takes its inspiration from the classic documentary Paris Is Burning to create a fresh and funny musical extravaganza and Xavier Dolan returns with Laurence Anyways, a stylish gender-bending epic which picked up the Queer Palm award at 2012 Cannes Film Festival. In Keep the Lights On Ira Sach brilliantly portrays the highs and lows of a ten year relationship, while sex, class and race collide in the taut and provocative drama Grande Ecole.

Comedy comes in the form of You Should Meet My Son - concerning an overbearing Southern Mom's efforts to secure a boyfriend for her only child - while Gayby follows gay singleton Matt and his kooky best friend as they attempt to become parents. Documentaries are represented by two new features: Love Free or Die concerns the openly gay Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson and his campaign to help LGBT people receive acceptance in the faith and Call Me Kuchu is the moving story of the battle to stop brutally homophobic legislation in Uganda.

From the archive the programmers have selected the iconic 1972 musical Cabaret and are thrilled to be presenting rare screenings of the 1985 drama Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring an Oscar-winning William Hurt; other archival gems include the wonderful modern classic Beautiful Thing (1996) about love on a London council estate.

As part of the season in the Gallery space next to the Riverside Restaurant & Bar, there's photography from Chris Parkin's on-going project Body in Nature. Six men - a dancer, student, choreographer, fitness trainer, doctor and yoga teacher are found in natural environments including the sea, the beach, the woodlands and some man-created gardens.

Riverside Studios is a friendly and atmospheric venue just a few minutes walk from Hammersmith tube and boasts an award-winning restaurant and cafe-bar. Book tickets online or call the Box Office on 010 8237 1111.
