The beginning of every year sees the start of the "I'm going to join a Gym and get fit" season that so many guys embark on in the belief that a buffed body is a walking billboard for virility, writes Jim Gerard.

OutUK now begins a five part exploration into sex and exercise to try and confirm the old locker room assumption that exercise greatly enhances your sexual health. Is it true that the ultimate bedroom accolade is "sexual athlete" - and not, say, "sexual accountant."

A recent spate of scientific studies have demonstrated that

1) some of the declines in male sexual functioning often attributed to age are actually the result of sedentary living

2) regular, moderate exercise can help prevent, reduce, or even reverse major sexual problems - from erectile dysfunction (E.D.), to low libido, in both men and women.

Results from the 10-year Massachusetts Male Ageing Study, the largest random-sample investigation ever done of E.D., found a direct correlation between physical inactivity and a lack of potency. Sedentary men had the highest risk for impotence, while men who worked out had the lowest. John McKinlay, an epidemiologist at the New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Mass., and co-author of several recent reports based on the study, emphasized the power of exercise. "Of all the lifestyle factors that were considered - including quitting cigarettes or alcohol," he says, "the only thing that helped reverse E.D. was taking a brisk two-mile walk -- or the equivalent -- every day."

EXERCISE AND ERECTIONS

A second study, conducted by at the Harvard School of Public Health, revealed that men who exercised vigorously for 20-30 minutes a day were about half as likely to have erection problems as their inert brethren. And the Harvard scientists discovered that as a man's waist size increased, so did his chance of becoming Mr. E.D.

At the University of California at San Diego, a study of 78 sedentary but healthy middle- aged men proved that those who started working out vigorously (3-4 times a week, for 60 minutes per session) reported more frequent sexual activity and orgasms, more reliable function during sex, and a higher percentage of satisfying orgasms. (I'm no scientist, but is there such a thing as an unsatisfying orgasm?)
