The United Kingdom’s independent lobby group Stonewall has released a list of the 100 best gay friendly companies in the country — and nearly 25-percent of them are banks and government departments, reports Ross von Metzke.
The top named employer in the group’s first Corporate Equality Index is the British Council.

Citigroup, Credit Suisse First Boston, IBM and the Manchester City Council all tied in second place.

Each company was ranked based on various criteria including equality policies, openly gay staff, if the company placed recruitment advertisements in the gay press and benefits available to same-sex partnerships.

“For the first time, the Corporate Equality Index will give 1.7 million gay people in the UK workforce the chance to choose a gay friendly employer,” says Stonewall’s chief executive Ben Summerskill.

“Gay staff still face a pink plateau in many British workplaces,” he added.

Sir David Green, director-general of the British Council - named top employer for 2005 - said they were “thrilled.”

“This recognizes the work the British Council has undertaken to promote equality and diversity...both in the UK and around the world,” he told BBC News.

The study follows research in Wales that found one in four lesbian, gay or bisexual workers had been forced to leave a job due to discrimination.

Strathclyde’s fire brigade and police are the top rated emergency services, joined by the Metropolitan Police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Ambulance Service.

Six employers in the list, including two local authorities, requested their names be omitted.
