For someone as famous as George Michael it's surprising he managed to keep his sexuality a secret for as long as he did. Although he had been out to family and friends for a long time, when it came to the press, Michael chose to protect his privacy. "As for my fans, I think I tried to tell them everything through my work, as opposed to using the media. But in all honesty I think I blew that particular strategy in a big way."

Following his arrest, rather than lie low George Michael decided to come clean: "I feel stupid, reckless and weak for having allowed my sexuality to be exposed in this way, but I don't feel any shame whatsoever, and neither do I think I should."

By refusing to feel remorse for what amounted to a victimless crime, George Michael gained respect from gays all over the world. He even celebrated his new found notoriety in the video for his single 'Outside'; which depicted couples engaging in alfresco sex. However, regarding his status as a gay icon, George Michael has said: "I don't really see myself as being a role model for anyone … unless gay youths are looking for advice on how to get arrested."
