OutUK is proud to have been a main sponsor of 2004's biggest gay sporting
event in the UK - The Bingham Cup. First held in San Francisco in 2002, this was the
prestigious international rugby competition for gay and bisexual
men, named in remembrance of Mark Bingham,
an heroic victim of Sept 11th.
Mark Bingham was a keen rugby player who played for one of the US's leading gay rugby teams, he was one of the group of
passengers who overpowered the hijackers on Flight 93, bringing the plane down before it could
hit its intended target, believed to be The White House.
The Bingham Cup was held over the May Bank Holiday weekend at London's Esher RFC ground.
The winners
were the San Francisco Fog RFC (top), who beat the Manchester Village Spartans (middle) 26-7 in the final. The Fog are
Mark's team, and the presentations were made by Alice, Mark's mother. The Bingham
Cup Plate was won by Kings Cross Steelers (right) 10-5 after a thrilling final with the Gotham Knights and the
Bingham Cup Bowl went to Philadelphia Gryphons.
