The first IGLFA World Championship was held in Atlanta in 1991 and has been played
annually since then. In 2000 in Cologne, Britain, represented by teams from Stonewall FC,
won the Competitive Class as well as Gold and Bronze awards in the Recreational Class.
The British Lesbian team, the Lionesses, reached the semi-final stage. As well as the football,
there's a big programme of social events so that gay footballers and their supporters
from around the world can meet each other.
Andy Francis Chair of London 2001 says, "We're delighted to welcome OutUK as a
sponsor of the Championships. We believe their support and promotion of the Championships
will contribute greatly to the reputation of British gay and lesbian sport in this country
and in the eyes of the world. It looks like London 2001 is going to be the best IGLFA World
Championship yet."
Here on OutUK we'll be providing a full news and results service and Editor Mike
Gray says "It's time that this country caught up with the rest of the world in
encouraging and promoting gay and lesbian sport. The UK has some outstanding gay and
lesbian football players and we're proud to be sponsoring the Fair Play awards in the
IGLFA Championships this year. We're looking forward to some great world-class football
this summer."
London 2001 opens on Sunday 5th August with the Closing Ceremony on Saturday 11th August
with games being played at the University Of Westminster Sports Grounds in Chiswick.
