MARDI GRAS CITY GOES FOR GAY GAMES

As the city of Sydney partied and prepared for this year's Mardi Gras Parade, online registration began for another gay celebration - the 2002 Gay Games. Having just hosted the 2000 Olympics, the city will use the same state-of-the-art sports facilities for the first Gay Games of the southern hemisphere.
As happened in Amsterdam in 1998, the Games are being backed by the government. New South Wales Premier Bob Carr is encouraging as many gay athletes as possible to take part. "Our city is passionate about sport and upholds diversity as one of our greatest strengths."

Unlike the Olympics anyone can take part in a Gay Games event. It's expected that 14,000 people will register for Gay Games VI - 80 % online - and an additional 25,000 people will visit Sydney for the Games which start with an opening ceremony on 2 November, 2002. Sydney 2002 CEO Stuart Borrie is also encouraging participants to register early. "Sydney has a strong tradition of successful lesbian and gay events – and Sydney 2002 will build on this by creating our own brand of Gay Games magic" he said.

You can register for the Gay Games at the Sydney 2002 website.
