Welcome to the OutUK series looking at gay men and their health brought to you in association with the NHS website.
Each week we'll tackle a different topic in our A to Z of Gay Health. We'll have features and advice on everything from relationships, sexual health, mental and physical conditions and how to stay fit. You can follow any of links provided below for more information direct from the NHS website, or see this week's feature L: Laxatives.

About Felodipine

NHS medicines information on felodipine - what it's used for and key facts.

Felodipine is a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

If you have high blood pressure, it helps to prevent future heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

Felodipine is also used to prevent chest pain caused by heart disease (angina).

Felodipine lowers your blood pressure and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.

This medicine is only available on prescription. It comes as slow release tablets.

Key facts

  • You'll usually take felodipine once a day in the morning.
  • Felodipine starts to work on the day you start taking it. If you're taking it for high blood pressure you may not feel any different but the medicine is working and it's important to keep taking it. If you're taking it for angina it may take a couple of weeks for it to help your symptoms.
  • Felodipine can make some people feel dizzy. If this happens to you, do not drive a car, ride a bike, or use tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you're taking felodipine. Grapefruit can make side effects worse.
